Dear MBUSD Parents and Community,

I hope this message finds you well. Last Thursday, the MBUSD Board of Trustees and District staff hosted a Community Budget Workshop at the District Office. The workshop provided an opportunity for community members to share public comment, hear a detailed budget update and presentation from Deputy Superintendent Dr. Dawnalyn Murakawa-Leopard, and participate in a live Q&A session. The meeting was recorded and can be viewed here.

During the session, Board members and District staff engaged in thoughtful dialogue with attendees, answering questions related to expenditures, revenue, and special education. While many topics were addressed, there were additional questions that could not be covered within the allotted time. To ensure those questions are fully addressed, the District will be publishing a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document this week with responses to the remaining items.

We encourage our community to stay engaged as we continue to work through and share budget updates. The next board meeting will be on Wednesday, February 25 at 5:00 p.m. For those who are unable to attend in-person, the meeting will be recorded and posted here.

With that update, here’s an overview of what will be highlighted in this week’s newsletter:

E-Bike Safety Reminder for Students and Families

E-bikes are an increasingly common way for students to get to and from school, providing flexibility and independence. However, with increased use has come a rise in serious accidents involving teens often tied to speed, inexperience, or failure to follow safety laws.

State and local regulations are in place to protect riders and our broader community. We encourage families to review the important safety reminders and legal requirements outlined below to help ensure students are riding responsibly and safely.

Student Civic Engagement and Campus Safety at MBUSD

MBUSD is aware of recent student civic engagement activities and walkouts at our secondary campuses. While state law protects students’ rights to expression, the District remains neutral on political matters and does not organize or endorse demonstrations. Student safety, instructional continuity, and adherence to attendance policies remain our priority. Classes continued as scheduled, and administrators were present to support campus supervision.

Assessment Corner: The Early Assessment Program (EAP) - How the State Tests Can Save Students Time and Money in College with High Scores in High School Now

MBUSD Assessment Corner

Did you know 11th-grade CAASPP scores can help students test out of non-credit college classes? Through the Early Assessment Program (EAP), students who score Standard Exceeded or Standard Met with a qualifying 12th-grade course grade may be exempt from lower-level math or English courses at CSU or California Community Colleges. This is one more reason we encourage students to give their best effort on CAASPP this spring.
